“The Ghazal King” Jagjit Singh was a music composer, Gazal singer and musician of India (8th February,1941–10th October, 2011). He is credited with reviving melodious Urdu and Hindi Ghazal compositions with his simple, strong voice and easy tunes. His popularity reached at its peak and Jagjit Singh: The King of Ghazals earned his place in hearts of each member of Indian household! His melodious voice and style of singing gave makeover to Indian Classical Music art form. The Ghazal meanings, wordings and hence Urdu Poetry reached masses in simple melodious tunes for all to enjoy and remember.

Jagjit Singh’s soulful voice is missed by his audience worldwide and Ghazal fans keep remembering him through his numerous albums and meaningful, heart touching and beautifully sung Geet (songs) and Ghazal compositions.

I was introduced to his Ghazals in middle school years when somebody gifted his music cassette to my parents on their anniversary. While parents hardly could spend time listening to Maestro, I being a quick learner and music lover carefully listened and learned all ghazals by heart without knowing the meaning of the Ghazals, which were meant for mature audiences.

That was my initial Urdu lyrics/diction training. I used to sing them in family gathering and gained appreciation and prize money from grandparents. Nostalgic!

I used to write the complex Urdu words and their meanings in my notebook, after consulting my grandfather, who was an established poet/ writer of Hindi, Urdu and English compositions. I later earned “Jagjit Singh EP/LP records” by him on B’days and school results.

Life was simple and gifts were awesome!

My understanding and initial training of Urdu and love for the language, Ghazals and literature are all inspired by The Ghazal King’s brilliant musical contribution in my formative years.
